In its most recent September issue, Denver’s 5280 Magazine announced the 2011 Five Star Professional Awards for Denver Real Estate Agents and I was one of the fortunate agents selected! The elite group of award winning agents represents less than 7% of Real Estate agents in the Denver metro area, so to be recognized by peers and clients is a true honor. Many thanks to my wonderful buyers and sellers-you are the reason I was chosen and my goal is to continue to provide future clients with the same degree of quality service for which I have become known!
We just received some important news from our friend in the mortgage business, Albin Ulle, Loan Officer at First Cal. He shares:

I just read a newspaper article that said the average sold price for a home in Pitkin County was $5.57 million for the first two months of this year- up some 28% for all of the county last year. The highest sale was for a single family home in Aspen that sold for $20 million – and I wondered what my grandfather would have thought about th
at.
In July of 1880 DRC Brown, my grandfather, and Henry Cowenhoven had their first glimpse of Aspen and the Roaring Fork Valley “… we left for Aspen next morning and it took us all that day to make eight miles, which brought us within four miles of Aspen. In the morning we broke camp about 10 o’clock and at 2:30 p.m., in July 1880, we had our first view of the Roaring Fork Valley and, to me, it was the most wonderful sight I ever beheld. ..”. The next morning my grandfather and Mr. Cowenhoven bought a lot on which to build their general store and a house. They paid $75 for it.
Today’s Aspen is a far cry from the tiny mining town of the 1880′s. Celebrities from all over the world arrive in Aspen in private jets to spend time in gorgeous vacation homes. Time shares have definitely changed the flavor of the city but one thing that has not changed in 131 years is the beauty of the Roaring Fork Valley-it continues to be one of the most beautiful sights to behold.
April 1st marks the beginning of a lot of things:
- April Fools Day
- the beginning of the second quarter of the year
- the monthly First Friday Art Walk on Santa Fe
- the Colorado Rockies Season Opener at Coors Field against the Arizona Diamondbacks, and
-
the beginning of Denver’s street sweeping season
From April through November, Denver residents need to be aware of their street sweeping schedule. Signs are posted near both ends of the block. It’s a minor inconvenience but it’s just one among many of the contributing factors to Denver being such a gorgeous city. Here are some helpful tips:
Take a picture of the sign on your street, keep it in your cell phone (create a contact for “parking”)
Enter the no-parking dates on your calendar and set a notification reminder
Follow this link to the Denver Street Sweeping notification and sign up for reminder emails
Even if you have the luxury of parking in a garage, you want to be aware of these dates. Give guests and service providers a head’s up if they are coming to your home on street sweeping day.
Realtors: be aware of street sweeping dates for all your properties. Providing this information to the Buying Agents showing the property you are representing is an added touch they will appreciate.
Hopefully, by being aware of the street sweeping season, you can avoid getting a citation. In the unfortunate event you get a parking ticket, you can pay it online 24/7 through the City of Denver’s OnLine Service Center.
Getting a parking ticket on April Fools Day… or anytime… is no joking matter.

My New Year’s resolution this year was to make time to ski every Monday…I dutifully put it on my calendar and bought a Winter Park ski pass. I had gotten a really fine pair of K2 Free Love skis at the end of last season so I was all set- or so I thought! When it came time to put on my 10 year old boots, my feet rebelled-it took me a full 10 minutes of painful stuffing and hopping around to get my feet in the boots. Rats! this would never do…I went to a local ski shop and tried on several pairs of boots-none felt very good and it was still a struggle to get them on…sigh… I knew it was time to pay a visit to Jacques Thomas at Le Feet Lab in Winter Park.
Jacques is the quintessential professional when it comes to fitting boots- he’s been doing it at Winter Park for over 30 years so he got right to work: first making a custom orthotic for both feet while heating up the boots. Next he put the orthotics in the boots had me stand up and simply said, “pull the tag in the back of the boot and slide your foot in.” I’m thinking, “yea, right”…but lo and behold! My foot effortlessly slipped into the boot- I felt just like Cinderella. Jacques told me to walk around in both boots and flex…no problem, I told him I could dance in those boots they fit so well and were so comfortable!
If the boots need to be tweaked, Jacques will do so at no cost. Are they more expensive than regular boots- yes, of course- you are getting custom fitted boots and orthotics but is it worth it? Yes, oh yes and these boots will last me a long, long time!
Your pre-existing medical condition may no longer mean denial. Colorado has you covered!
If you are one of the estimated 932,000-plus people in the State of Colorado who have a pre-existing medical condition, have been denied insurance coverage because of it and have been without insurance for six months and are still alive, there may be good news for you: Colorado’s non-profit organizations, Rocky Mountain Health Plans and CoverColorado are teaming up to administer GettingUSCovered- a new government funded program that has been contracted by the Dept. of Health and Human Services.
In 2014 it will be mandatory for insurance companies to cover all applicants regardless of pre-existing conditions. That’s great but what about the meantime? Depending on what that pre-existing condition is, those three years can mean the difference between life and death at worst, or a substantial difference in quality of life.
GettingUSCovered will be paid for by enrollment premiums and the $90 million in federal subsidy that Colorado will receive over the next three years.
There are certain qualifications. (Don’t worry, if you don’t qualify for the GettingUSCovered program, you might qualify for the CoverColorado program… they are two different things so check them both out.)
It’s not free but you can calculate your premiums on their website.
Best news of all is there’s not a long waiting period. If you enroll in July or August your coverage should begin on September 1st.
Colorado is one of 30 states that is being proactive in providing their residents who have pre-existing medical conditions an alternative to being denied insurance at a time when it is most needed. They are hoping to eventually expand coverage to include the 4000 Colorado residents who are currently uninsured.
